Production Launch – ‘Calendar Girls’

6 March, 2023 @ 7:30 pm 9:30 pm

Calendar Girls by Tim Firth

Directed by Denise Phillips

To be performed from Tuesday 13 June to Saturday 24 June 2023 at 7.30pm.

I was delighted to put my name forward to direct this iconic play which many will remember as a film starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters.

It is of course based on a true story and there are some fabulous parts for women. A mixture of sadness, poignancy and a great deal of humour will, I am sure, delight our audiences.

The action of the play takes place in Knapley Village Hall, a hill within the Village and a Guild conference in London. Time set is the present.

Are you interested in getting involved in this production, either onstage or off? Come along to this production launch to meet the director. There’ll be a read through of the play and you can then decide if you’d like to get involved.

For people interested in acting, the auditions will be on Monday 13 March 2023 at 7.30pm in the theatre’s Upper Foyer.

The Characters

CHRIS – loves holding court and being the centre of attention. In her 50s.

ANNIE – less confrontational than Chris. Enough edge to be interesting and enough salt not to be too sweet. Annie and Chris are great friends and behave like naughty school girls.

CORA – The joker in the pack. Her wit is dead pan. Needs to be a competent singer and ideally a pianist. Age around 40.

JESSIE – Former Teacher and a stickler for good grammar. A lover of life. Late 60s/70s.

CELIA – Integrated into the WI. A great fan of Jessie and forges a true friendship. Aged anything from 35-50.

RUTH – Eager to please but not a rag doll. Desperate to keep everyone happy. 40s.

MARIE – Life has scolded her and therefore the WI provides the support she needs. 50s.

JOHN – Annie’s husband. Tragically dies of leukaemia. A well liked man who is the inspiration to the fund raising effort. 50s.

ROD – Chris’s husband. Dead pan humour, drinks a lot but doesn’t have a problem. John was his mate. 50s.

LAWRENCE – Shy but happy to arrange the all important shots! 20s/30s.

LADY  CRAVENSHIRE – She doesn’t mean to be patronising but when she makes an entrance she must make an entrance. 60s.

ELAINE – The youngest member of the group. 20s.

LIAM – The photographer. 20s/30s.
