This is your opportunity to become involved with the Highbury Players forthcoming production of …
Blue Remembered Hills
by Dennis Potter
Directed by Phil Astle
To be performed from Tuesday 5 to Saturday 16 March 2024 at 7:30pm.
The “unique selling point” of Blue Remembered Hills is that the actors all play 7-year-old children. It is very much an “actors’ play”, with seven very well-defined characters. (2 female and 5 male actors, though there is one male character that could possibly be played by a female actor in some circumstances.) It’s a short play set in a Somerset wood during the 1943 summer holiday of World War II.
The play harks back to those blue remembered hills of childhood and a former age of long summer holidays when children could go off with their friends for the day free of adult supervision, so long as they came home before dark. However, there is irony in the title and above the revealing playing out of ‘mums and dads’ and ordinary childhood dramas of the pecking order between the boys and ‘who-fancies-who’ between boys and girls, there are small and larger tragedies hinted of and then real. In the background, there is the black shadow of a world war raging.
It is a physical play and at least 6 of the 7 actors need to be able to move freely and confidently. You do not have to be an athlete though!
I would like to make this a visual and audio experience for audiences with imaginative and integrated use of set, lighting, and sound!
Interested in taking part? Either onstage or off? Then come along to meet the director at the Production Launch on Monday 27 November 2023 at 7:30pm in the theatre’s Upper Foyer. There’ll be a read through of the play, after which you can decide if you’d like to get involved.
If you are interested in taking part in this production but unable to make the Production Launch, or have any questions, please get in touch using email@example.com, where your message will be forwarded to the director.
For people interested in acting, the Auditions will be on Monday 4 December 2023 at 7:30pm also in the theatre’s Upper Foyer.
ANGELA – Pretty and manipulative.
AUDREY – Angela’s plainer, evil, lieutenant.
PETER – The bully, hard and tough.
JOHN – Sometime hero – Peter’s hardly squeaky-clean rival.
WILLIE – Aspirations to be a player, but soft, so manipulates.
RAYMOND – Sensitive, stutterer, wearer of cowboy hat.
DONALD – Cuts a pathetic figure of neglect and abuse. (Could be played by male or possibly a female.)
