An invitation from the director

Sheila’s Island
by Tim Firth

Directed by Phil Astle

To be performed from Tuesday 15 to Saturday 26 October 2024 at 7:30pm.

A cracking comedy drama in the mist from the pen of Tim Firth (Calendar Girls).

Four female middle managers are stranded on an island in the Lake District during an outward-bound team-building weekend. Our intrepid heroines find themselves manufacturing weapons from bras and spatulas: create a rescue flag with a plastic plate and a toasting fork.

Questions are asked; truths are told; dirty washing is aired and gets wet again! Is it possible to build an adequate night shelter with a prom dress and some camouflage? What is Julie’s husband really up to in Aldi? And why are they on this bloody team building exercise when they could be at a spa?

The play is quite physical so actors need to be mobile and at least one will have to climb a tree.

It will be a busy but satisfying production for sound and light designers and operators. There are many changes in time of day and a lot of mist. Effects for a ferry, a helicopter, an aeroplane and a distant firework display, all need to be integrated. There will also be a large screen projection against an eye catching set.

This play uses a very large number of props which need to be organised so that the cast can access them easily on stage.

Interested in taking part? Either onstage or off? Then come along to meet the director at the Production Launch on Thursday 18 July 2024 at 7:30pm in the theatre’s Upper Foyer. There’ll be a read through of the play, after which you can decide if you’d like to get involved.

If you are interested in taking part in this production but unable to make the Production Launch, or have any questions, please get in touch using comms@highburytheatre.co.uk, where your message will be forwarded to the director.

For people interested in acting, the Auditions will be on Monday 22 July 2024 at 7:30pm, also in the theatre’s Upper Foyer.

The Characters

An ensemble piece – four cracking female characters, performing age 40 plus.

SHEILA – Elected team leader but has she been just a little too cryptic? Can she keep the team on the road, or is it the water and what item is Inventory Number 54?

JULIE – The woman who grew-up missing the last 20 minutes of every film because she had to catch a bus. Who seems to literally have everything but finds having a real life is proving as elusive as her husband.

FAY – Recovering from something but is she just for the birds?

DENISE – If Sheila is cryptic, Denise is a sceptic and possibly septic. The master of the quick quip remark grenade to cut down her colleagues.
